Could One SCD Study Change Primary Care Textbooks?
Since I got my health back, I have this new found “awareness” for the little things in life.
It’s like a “Spidy-sense” for all the little things that make us happy.
Like last week, I was having one of those days where I didn’t get enough sleep the night before, I had a little too much coffee, work was tough, and needed to get food after work.
Awesome right?
There weren’t any spots near the door, so I parked in the way back, you know, the part of the parking lot with 50 abandoned, rusting out carts because it’s too far for the cart-guy to go get them.
And it was 10°F out.
I walked into the store a little flustered when I heard a soft voice say, “Good afternoon sir – you look exhausted, can I help you with anything?”
I looked up at the greeter to find an older gentleman with an ear-to-ear grin that instantly took me back to my childhood and those Werther’s Original ads with Robert Rockwell as that kind-hearted grandfather.
That was it – my entire day melted away… his contagious smile became plastered on my face.
The rest of the night nothing could take away my good vibes and I made sure to pass them on to everyone I came across.
In a flash, one man changed my entire day…
The Power of ONE
Every living, breathing person was born with an innate power.
Giving away this power is one of the saddest actions.
I give away my power all the time:
- I should say Please and Thank You more often
- I should open more doors
- I should smile more
But I don’t, I skip simple courtesies all the time…why?
I think it is related to the idea that most people don’t seem to value the small efforts… and some days the small things don’t seem worthwhile or all that powerful to me.
But that is precisely why I need to step it up, it isn’t about me, it is about the other humans I come into contact every day, the ones:
- Who poop 12 times a day
- Who just lost their job
- Who just buried a loved one
A single action, an infectious smile, hearty hello or common courtesy might change this person’s day, week or month.
This is the power of one.
The best part of this power is it can multiply in a heartbeat.
I doubt the brave soldiers knew the power of their actions as they stormed the beach of Normandy.
No doubt in my mind that Rosa Parks had had enough and was ready to be heard… she had no thoughts of starting a liberation.
The man in front of the store smiled at me and brightened my night and many others, how far did his cheer spread?
Exercise Your Power Today
Every day, as we rise from bed, we are presented several opportunities to enhance our lives and enrich the lives of others around us.
And Rush University Medical Center in Chicago has decided to do just this.
They’ve secured the funding to do a brand new, expensive, in-depth study whose benefit is unknown.
Does diet modification change the composition of the gut flora?
No pharmaceutical or political parties win if they prove it. They are expressing their power of ONE.
Now, I want to ask you to do the same.
One study might lead to One more, which might lead to One Hundred more, which might lead to a whole new IBD treatment program.
Get Involved Right Now
If you have a clinically diagnosed IBD, are over the age of 8 and are following SCD, we need you to be a One.
So that together WE are the Power of ONE Study.
Use your power and sign up, find out how to participate in the new SCD study HERE:
*** UPDATE (3/11): I just got word from Rush University that this post filled all the remaining spots in the study. Thank you so much for taking action and signing up – the SCD community does it again! They do still need control subjects that aren’t on the diet so if any of your friends or family would be willing to participate please contact them.***
(View the PDF in a new window.)
Trust me, they need more volunteers than you think.
